Experience Roatán Culture First Hand

Life on Roatán is different from mainland Honduras life. Because of its unique history, English is widely spoken in Roatán, although the official language of Honduras is Spanish. Roatán’s history includes 200 years of Spanish conquistadores and British pirates battling for control of the Bay Islands, as well as the Garifuna culture. Due to this rich history, Roatán’s culture is colorful and diverse—and the local events are proof of that.

Roatán's fun loving locals stage a lot of celebrations and events during the year. Mix and mingle with others, and soak up the authentic spirit of Roatán with each and every event that takes place just outside our doors. If you come in April, be sure to enjoy the Garifuna carnival in Punta Gorda, commemorating the arrival of the first Garifuna people in Roatán. September 15th is Honduras’ Independence Day and a cause for revelry all around the island.
